Mathieu van Bellen and The Busch Ensemble

at Florian Leonhard Fine Violins

Yesterday (15th June 2011) Mathieu Van Bellen was rehearsing in our showroom. He spoke to us about his upcoming performances with the Busch Ensemble as well as about a documentary which is also being filmed.

“For the last few days we have been preparing for the Northern Chords Music Festival in Newcastle. One of the pieces we will be playing there is the Brahms piano quintet which is what you just heard. During the Northern Chords festival, The Busch Ensemble (Mathieu van Bellen, Bartosz Woroch, Soh-Yon Kim and Jonathan Bloxham) will give 6 concerts in and around Newcastle, including one at the Sage Gateshead.

Just before your rehearsal, there was a television crew filming you here. Could you please tell us more about it?

For the last two weeks a television crew has been filming me. They are making a documentary following two different artists, myself and a ballet dancer, as we start to forge our careers and grow artistically. The documentary will premiere in September during the Film by the Sea Festival in Vlissingen, Holland which is where I originally come from.

Why did you choose to film at Florian's?

One of the reasons the crew came across from Holland to film me in London was to be able to see me in places which were important to me.  Obviously I have spent a lot of time at Florian's over the past few years, having my violin and bow taken care of and giving concerts, but more importantly to me is that this is where I found my violin! Without Florian I wouldn’t be where I am right now, so I wanted to involve him in this project. I am very grateful to Florian for his ongoing support and generosity.
